Partial discharge is a major cause of insulation degradation in power transmission and transformation equipment, and also a significant indicator and manifestation of insulation degradation. Therefore, online monitoring, diagnosis, and evaluation of partial discharge signals within power transmission and transformation equipment are of paramount importance.

A partial discharge detector is an instrument used to detect partial discharge signals within electrical equipment. This equipment is also known as a digital partial discharge detection system, partial discharge tester, partial discharge meter, generator partial discharge measurement system, etc.

This type of instrument is used in power sectors, manufacturers, and research institutions. It can be used for type testing, factory testing, new product development testing, and online inspection and insulation defect location of operating power equipment.

The detection results can be displayed as partial discharge spectrum information in two-dimensional and three-dimensional graphics. The instrument supports single or dual signal input; the dual input mode enables balanced circuit detection and pulse polarity identification detection functions.

The detection methods, measurement circuits, and technical performance parameters of the partial discharge tester must comply with the requirements of partial discharge measurement standards such as GB7354-87 and IEC-270.

The instrument typically features programmable operation, a Chinese menu interface, data storage and printing, and automatic test report generation. Its display system can present two-dimensional and three-dimensional partial discharge maps. Digital windowing technology helps suppress interference. Dual-channel measurement and digital differential technology can be used to simultaneously measure the partial discharge signals of two samples or two measurement points on one sample to analyze the signal source. This type of instrument was a key national "Seventh Five-Year Plan" scientific and technological research project and a key promotion project of the Ministry of Electric Power during the "Eighth Five-Year Plan" period. It has been used to test transformers at locations such as the Gezhouba 50kV switchyard, the Wuhan Fenghuangshan 500kV substation, and the Shenyang Transformer Factory.
